Jumping Off Cliffs To Find My Wings

Ko-Shin Jumping off cliffs with Kurt Vonnegut

It has been an embarrassingly long time since I have posted here on this website. It’s not due to having very little to say or share – I actually have been going through so much in my life in the past year that I went into artistic monk status and needed time to cocoon and embrace the changes that have been occurring inside and outside of me. It has been such a powerful transformation and I am still in the process of it.

Clearly I am giving birth to a whole new me (yet again, welcome to my universe). “Identity” seems to be one of the core themes that my life, art, music and journey are about. I think its interesting to see how people in different cultures around the world relate to the concept of a self.

As a visual artist, writer and mentor, I have been working on developing projects to serve other creative people. My teacher’s and guides instilled within me at an early age that it is important to keep sharing the techniques and teachings, for our creative expression to be passed down from warm hand to warm hand. The arts are a living, breathing entity and I realize that I have to keep sharing what I know with the people who want to follow a similar journey.

In the process of all these changes and transformations, I have struggled to find my own inner rhythm and balance.  I know in my heart that everything I am and do is connected and that someday soon the big picture will reveal itself.

I think we all go through this kinda thing. The more I told myself “girl, you need to write a blog post” the more I froze and just felt like I couldn’t and didn’t want to face this part of me. The most powerful and raw and real and beloved and sacred part of me. Well you know what, it happens. We go through cycles in our lives and we don’t realize what’s going on. We need time to respect our personal creative and spiritual processes so we can expand and transform into a more powerful version of ourselves. Ko-Shin 2.0 – the upgrade!

I have decided that this website and blog will be the home to my most passionate and personal creations – my music, my art and my heart and soul. The things that matter to me most and that I want to share with you. I hope it will inspire you in some way. Truth be told, I just have to be who I am – and I think when we are our most vulnerable, we are actually our most powerful.

The past three years of my life I have been living as an expat in Barcelona, Spain. If you have never left the comfort of home, family and culture behind to live in a far off land where few people properly speak your language, and everything you loved or took for granted looks and feels completely different – it will be hard to understand what it’s really like to be in my shoes. For those of you who have bravely left home, no matter the circumstances, I tip my hat to you. It ‘aint easy or always a delight. But it is always expansive. An opportunity to become more than you were before.

I finally admitted to myself that I am a truly brave and adventurous soul. On a very deep level, I have lived my life willing to travel into the heart of the unknown. To take chances and be open to change. I am excited to keep jumping off cliffs and have faith that my wings will appear on the way down. Either that or I will fall. Really damn hard. Either way, I will know that I gave it everything I’ve got.

Bayou Maharajah: The Tragic Genius Of James Booker

Beefeater In Edit film festival Barcelona

Beefeater In Edit film festival Barcelona

This week I went to a screening of an amazing documentary film at the In-Edit Festival in Barcelona about the life of the brilliant yet tragic “New Orleans Prince of Piano” James Booker. It made a huge impression on me so I wanted to share it with you because I think it is an important film to see, especially if you are interested in modern music at all. The film premiered this year in March at the SXSW Festival in Austin, TX and has sold out in many countries across the globe.

The legendary musician Dr. John described Booker as “the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has ever produced” and he was being understated, to say the least. The film gave an honest portrayal of James Booker, filled with incredible rare footage including live performances, interviews, and incredible commentaries from people who knew or had been influenced by him. Harry Connick, Jr was hugely influenced by Booker having met him as a young boy through his father who was best known as the District Attorney of the Parrish of Orleans.

The legendary James Booker “Piano Prince of New Orleans”

Classically trained, and influenced by having been born & raised in the thumpin’ and bumpin’ New Orleans, LA –  his music was a powerfully complex melange of jazz, blues, gospel, soul, ragtime, boogie-woogie & the original R&B with distinctly classical influences. His sound was completely his own original creation, and I absolutely love it! The “I need all of his records that I can get my hands on” kind-of-love.

Like so many musical and creative geniuses, it was a major challenge for him to live on the earth and lead a grounded existence. His addiction to heroin and alcohol (and who knows what else) were his coping mechanisms that he explicitly knew were poisoning his body (he even sung about it). But he was addicted and in my opinion heart-broken at a certain point in his life. As you might imagine his life tragically ended rather early, and it just stung me a bit to think of what a loss it was for him and the rest of us. His music was an extraordinary gift – I can only wonder what the world would be like if he were still in it.

It made me think about how important it is for artists to truly feel their own self-worth, and the immense value of the art we create and share with the world. I don’t think James Booker realized how extraordinary he truly was. The amazing thing about recorded music is that in some way a part of the artist still lives on, and I feel truly grateful to be able to appreciate the part of him that he left with us. If you have a chance to see the film, go! Also check out his music, I think you will dig it.

LIVE THE DREAM – STOP CHASING IT!!!

I read recently this amazing quote “Dreams Don’t Work Unless You Do” – that’s a real life-changer, right?! You have to dream first, and get clarity before you get into action. People are always talking about chasing your dreams – and I really got kind of irritated with the image of MY dream being something in front of me that I was chasing. Our words have great power, why should I see life through such a limited perspective. So I decided to create this little inspiring poster for you – Don’t Chase Your Dreams – Live Them” – isn’t that a much more empowering and inspirational message!

Dont Chase your Dreams - Live them!

It all begins with our words – they really do have power. Each of us has the power to consciously choose how we want to see the world. Be a part of the evolution of our culture and use your mind to create empowering beliefs – So grab this pic off the page, Pin it, share it, tweet it, facebook it – we gotta get this message out there! MAKE DREAMS COME TRUE & FIND YOUR OWN YELLOW BRICK ROAD

Somewhere over the rainbow, under a patch of rambling wildflowers, nestled among overgrown trees is my patch of paradise. I can sit here all day long soaking in the sunshine, playing with my beautiful dogs Princess Lola Jezebelle & Captain Bapuji von Snigglesworth. Together we are all smiles – feeling the bliss of the everything and the nothing. I know that my furry Zen masters have more to teach me about pure being than the other way around, so its my duty to allow them to guide me to letting go of all my silly ideas of have-to’s and need-to’s and want-to’s. All the things I should be tending to that are so much more important than my yellow brick road, right?!

What if I told you that the way you think dreams become a reality is actually so far removed from the magical truth of it all, that you might just spend the rest of your life chasing rainbows instead of dancing underneath them?

I really would rather have you over here playing with me then chasing your tail, so are you ready? Do you want to know the hidden secret to wealth, love, success and happiness?

What if I told you that dreams came true because you frolicked in the woods, basked in the sunshine & partied in the rain?! What if more got done when you celebrated, cherished and enjoyed than if you wrangled & wrestled your to-do list till it was checked off line by line – done and done! What if daydreams and pow-wows were the real secret to wealth and success instead of power-lunches and pinstripes?! What if you knew that pajama parties and pillow fights were the secret to everlasting love and romance?!

Hold on to your top hat, now! I promise you that there is a time and a place for everything. Daily chores have to get done and business demands have to be met – the secret is in how you do them. Do you wake up in a fluster, feeling like you’re already behind?! Do you feel like time is chasing you down so hard you can barely catch a breath?  Is your never ending to-do list starting to bear resemblance to an unclimbable skyscraper? Is the idea of life on a secluded desert island starting to feel like your only hope? Then, it’s time for a real mind-set shift direct from the understanding of great wise ones.  A tornado of cosmic-consciousness!

Ready?!! Here you go! *Poof*

All the great masters that have ever lived have known that The Greatest Secret To Life is in CELEBRATION!

“Life is a moment to celebrate, to enjoy. Make it fun, a celebration, and then you will enter the temple. The temple is not for the long-faced, it has never been for them. Look at life–do you see sadness anywhere? Have you ever seen a tree depressed? Have you seen a bird anxiety-ridden? Have you seen an animal neurotic? No, life is not like that, not at all. Only man has gone wrong somewhere, and he has gone wrong somewhere because he thinks himself to be very wise, very clever. Your cleverness is your disease. Don’t be too wise. Always remember to stop; don’t go to the extreme. A little foolishness and a little wisdom is good, and the right combination makes you a buddha.” Osho,  I Celebrate Myself

In order to live in a joyful new reality of well-being and celebration- you have to ask completely different questions, thinking different delicious new thoughts! Instead of looking at life as a half-empty glass, begin asking yourself juicy questions like: How do I want to enjoy my day? What do I want?!! What will bring me the most joy today? What is the BEST that can happen in this situation? What makes me feel the most alive?!

Celebrating the things you want most in your life, as if they have already arrived, actually brings them closer to you! How exciting is that!!!

According to the Teachings of Abraham, channeled through Esther Hicks – when we yearn for something it means we feel it as being far away from us, and since we live in an Allowing Universe we GET what we feel vibrationally aligned with. Feeling the essence of absence generates more absence + in plain english+ if you love something/someone feel this/them/it as being very close to you – and you will notice the power of your emotional connection to having something bringing it rapidly into your reality!!!

So keep dreaming and dreaming. In Technicolor! Imagine your dreams as being already here in this world. Celebrate their existence, feel the certainty of their manifestation just like a pregnant woman feels her unborn child growing in her womb. Feel the power of this certainty and I promise you will be singing and dancing all the way to the wizard’s castle!
